The Best Thing That's Ever Been Mine (Will become part of Give It All For You fic as the story progresses)

Damn this body and it's natural timers. I lay there in bed and waited until the first coo came breezing through the curtained arches that separated our room from the baby's nursery.  I straightened my lace nightgown over my thighs as I stood and shuffled over to the satin curtain, drew it back, and let it fall back in to place. As quickly as I could I reached into the little charcoal colored bassinet and pulled my baby from it's cushioned depths. I still couldn't believe this little guy was mine. Sure, the hair was definitely from my genetics, no one else had my precise shade of red. My family of ginger-haired people couldn't claim the deep red hair that grew lusciously from my head, that was a Potter trait. A Lily Potter trait. I had to stop calling it a Lily trait before my little guy felt left out.

Just then he opened his goober filled eyes and smile. He had just learned to smile and when he did both sides of his genetics shined. His red mane of hair perfectly framed his pale white skin, grey eyes, and smirking lips. Twenty years ago if someone had told my father this little baby he held, his only girl, would marry a Malfoy and have his child he would have laughed and bet money against it. He got over the fact that I planned on marrying Scorpius as soon as I told him I was pregnant. Scorpius and I had already been married secretly (His father knew and was present for the tiny ceremony because he wanted actual proof that we were married before we started living with each other.) and had been living with each other for almost five months before we decided to start a little family of our own.

A few months after this decision we knew about this child that was going to arrive in the next little while and began to make a space for him. Beyond our room was another wider room, more like a hall or common room, that had large doors opening right onto the grassy backyard and containing a stunning view of the lake. This was what we chose and painted the room in a soft grey and periwinkle combination. The day I finished placing the last decoration on the wall and put the bassinette under the mobile I went into labor and four hours later we held our baby. Scorpius was even more in love than I was at first glance. He was smitten, enamored really. All the names we talked about faded and only one seemed to fit. Phoenix James Malfoy was our sun and our stars from the moment he came screaming into our lives.

I pulled a bottle from the mini fridge and wand-warmed it before sitting in my rocking chair. I loved early morning feeding sessions, they were the most peaceful times of the day. Scorpius' soft sleeping sounds were soothing and the wind rippled the satin drapes like ripples cascading around waterlillies. I loved to watch my little man drink. His eyes never looked away from me for a second, with one exception. The second Scorpius came into view his eye shifted to his daddy and even if I called his name and lifted him to my face he wouldn't look away.

Marrying into the Malfoy family was one of the most intense things I had ever done but besides being married to Scorpius it came with some other huge perks. I didn't live in some little flat on top of a store with my family, no. I lived next to a blue lake in a house with eight bedrooms, two dining rooms, two living rooms/sitting rooms, a large marbled kitchen, and a four acre yard complete with old barn and rope swing. This was a house of dreams. The glass in the windows were magic made and never dirtied or broke just as the air itself had a quieting charm placed on it which made doors unnecessary. These imported satin curtains divided the rooms and once in place the spell used them as doors and kept unwanted noises at bay. I had always had money, being a Potter had it's perks as well, but nothing to the caliber of Malfoy money. It was nice to be comfortable but to sit here rocking my baby and listening to the soft breathing noises of my best friend, my lover, was worth more than every Galleon in the Wizarding world.

I was lulled from my thoughts as little fingers closed on my ruffled sleeve. Phoenix had finished his bottle and dozed back into sleep. Being unusually tired I placed him back in his window-view, blanket coated bed and crawled back under my own covers for a few more hours of rest.

* * * *

Again I stirred to check on Phoenix and glanced at the clock. 6:24. It had been four hours since he was last fed and cared for. As I slipped on a robe, noting the chill in the air, I made my way towards the sleeping treasure in the lake room. The satin had a life of its own and I panicked. Had I left the window open? It was too cold to be shut and poor Phoenix must have been freezing. The liquid-soft curtains bunched as I pushed them aside and slipped into the nursery.

Scorpius sat in the rocking chair, holding a content and serene Phoenix in one arm and a glass of bubbling juice in the other. An intricate side table had been placed just to my left and held a second cup of bubbly. I smiled, picked up my champagne glass and went to join my boys.

"Scorpius, why are you awake so early? You worked late last night and I assumed you would be tired and sleep until noon."

"I couldn't do that to you today. I've been planning this for weeks now and a late night at work couldn't push my plans back."

"What have you been planning? It's too early and my brain isn't good for much more than holding and feeding Phoenix until about nine."

"The beginning of my plans consists of taking complete care of our baby today. I want you to have a day to yourself for once."

I was sitting on Scorpius' lap with my legs resting over the other side of his while Phoenix had his head supported by a muscled forearm and his body laying in my lap. We must have looked like the picture perfect family, minus the dark circles under Scorpius' eyes and my giant, unkempt, bed-head hair. He was being so mysterious I couldn't look away from him and he wouldn't look away from me, not even to delight at the utter joy Phoenix was displaying as he cooed and slightly babbled. After a few more minutes of quiet admiration he made to stand. I stepped back and he put our little fire haired child back into the jumble of blankets. I thought we would be going back to sleep now but instead Scorpius raised his wand.

"Incendio!"

Almost a thousand flames shot from his wand and made their stays on the wicks of just as many tapered candles he had earlier placed around the room. It filled the entire space with flickering warmth and a soft flowery scent.

"Mrs. Lily Luna Malfoy, Happy Valentines Day. Might I have this dance?"

Another flick of his wand started a soft waltz and he held out a hand in that perfectly cultivated manor that often came with being raised in the Malfoy lineage. Who could resist a charmer like that? Certainly not I. Sun was just starting to dab at the windowsill and the pink clouds outside them brought the hue of the day to light. A waltz was certainly one of the most rejuvenating ways to start the day. I had never promenaded in my nightgown and slippers before and never with such an attractive gentleman in such a lovely atmosphere. It seemed like the marble carved faces along the arches watched us and sighed as we floated by below. Each candlestick added romance to the room and helped occupy and entertain Phoenix who was wide awake in the awe of airy music cascading around him.

Our waltz lasted a solid ten minutes and after being dipped, kissed, and walked over to the center arch I looked up into those sparkling grey eyes. He looked young again. That third year Scorpius came out, the one who used to tag team with Albus to mock me, cheer me, entertain me, and love me.

"Mi Lady, you could do for another hour or two of rest. I know you get up four or five times a night to care for Phoenix. Go back to bed, rest, and I'll bring you a light breakfast in an hour or so. Goodnight, my love."

"I love you Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy."

"I love you too Lily Luna Malfoy."

As I walked back into the room he poked his head in and spoke to me again.

"Happy Valentine's Day."

"Happy Valentine's Day. Thank you so much."

"Anything for you, my beautiful, classy, cunning, loving, charismatic, crazy, gentle wife. Anything for you."

For the third time I crawled back under my covers and fell instantly asleep. I imagine I was smiling as I faded into deep sleep, dreaming for the first time in a while. Scorpius and I had been treated so poorly as a couple when we first started dating. No one believed he was actually in it for the long run, that Scorpius Malfoy could actually want to be with a girl for more than physical fulfillment, that he could date, no marry, a Potter and be better off for it. All those who discouraged us seemed to be our biggest supporters now that we were married and chosen to forgive each other's families and our own faults and failures. We made it through the tremulous dating scene and came out on top, hand in hand. He valued me more than any possession he owned or could own. Words fail to describe my feelings towards him. He is the best thing that's ever been mine.
This is my Lily Scorpius piece for the Valentine's Day contest at [link]

This is one quiet Valentine's Day morning, presumably the second of the marriage.
